Why RC transfer matters more than the payment

The RC records the legal owner of the vehicle. Until it is transferred:

• The seller remains legally responsible for the bike. Traffic challans arrive in the seller’s name. If the bike is involved in an accident or an offence, the registered owner is the first person the authorities contact.
• The buyer cannot prove ownership, cannot get insurance in their own name properly, and can face problems selling the bike onward.

Documents required for RC transfer

• Original Registration Certificate (RC)
• Prescribed transfer forms signed by both seller and buyer (Forms 29 and 30)
• Valid insurance policy and PUC certificate
• Seller’s and buyer’s ID and address proof
• NOC from the financier, if the bike was under loan (hypothecation removal)
• Applicable RTO fee

The process in brief

Exact requirements and fees can vary, and the RTO may ask for additional documents in specific cases - for example, an NOC when the vehicle is registered in a different RTO’s jurisdiction. Check the current requirements with the RTO or on the official Parivahan portal before applying.

• 1. Seller and buyer complete and sign the transfer forms.
• 2. The application is submitted to the RTO (much of this can now be initiated online through the Parivahan portal).
• 3. The RTO verifies the documents and processes the transfer.
• 4. A new RC is issued in the buyer’s name. The sale is now legally complete.
